Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

The Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa is a points-tested permanent visa that allows skilled workers nominated by an Australian state or territory to live, work, and study in Australia indefinitely.

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

The Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) is a points-tested permanent visa for skilled workers who have been nominated by an Australian state or territory government. This visa allows you to live, work, and settle permanently in Australia, providing a clear pathway to permanent residency and citizenship.

With this visa, you can work and study anywhere within your nominating state or territory, sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residency, access Medicare, and travel in and out of Australia for up to five years from the date your visa is granted. This makes it an ideal option for professionals whose skills are in demand in specific regions, allowing you to contribute to local communities while building a long-term life in Australia.

With this visa, you can:

  • Stay in Australia permanently
  • Work and study in your nominating state or territory
  • Attend free English language classes through the Adult Migrant English Program (if eligible)
  • Enrol in Australia’s public healthcare scheme (Medicare)
  • Sponsor eligible relatives to come to Australia
  • Travel in and out of Australia freely for 5 years
  • Apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Subclass 190 visa, you must:

  • Be invited to apply after submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect
  • Be nominated by an Australian state or territory
  • Have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • Hold a suitable skills assessment for your nominated occupation
  • Be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation
  • Achieve at least 65 points on the points test (nomination adds 5 points)
  • Meet the English language requirement (Competent English or higher)
  • Satisfy health and character requirements
  • Have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government
  • Sign the Australian Values Statement
  • Family members included in the application must also meet health and character requirements. If they are not included, you must explain the reason (e.g., already a citizen or permanent resident).

State and Territory Nomination

Each Australian state and territory sets its own criteria for nomination. Once your EOI is submitted, state and territory agencies can nominate applicants whose skills match their regional needs. Nomination adds 5 points to your overall score and is essential for receiving an invitation to apply.

If a nomination is withdrawn after application, your visa application will become invalid.

Application Process

The Subclass 190 visa application is structured into five key steps:

  • Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) – Lodge your EOI in SkillSelect, specifying your preferred state or territory.
  • Receive a Nomination – A state or territory may nominate you if your skills and experience meet their requirements.
  • Gather Documents – Prepare documents supporting your skills, qualifications, work experience, English proficiency, and health and character requirements.
  • Apply Online – Once invited, you have 60 days to submit your visa application online.
  • Await Decision – The Department of Home Affairs will notify you in writing. If granted, you receive permanent residency, travel rights, and permission to sponsor eligible family members.

Visa Costs

  • Main applicant: AUD 4,910
  • Additional family members: Additional charges apply per applicant
  • Second installment: AUD 4,885 for dependants 18+ with less than functional English
  • Additional costs may include health checks, police certificates, and biometrics.

Travel and Residency

This is a permanent visa, letting you stay in Australia indefinitely. You can travel freely for 5 years after the grant date. After this period, a Resident Return Visa (RRV) is required to re-enter as a permanent resident. Permanent residency starts:

  • On the grant date, if you are in Australia
  • On first entry, if granted while you are outside Australia

Including Family Members

You can include:

  • Spouse or partner
  • Dependent children

Family members must meet health and character requirements, and you must provide reasons if they are not included.
