General Skill Migration
Overview
What is General Skilled Migration?
General Skilled Migration (GSM) is a points-based visa system aimed at skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer but wish to migrate to Australia independently. This program recognizes professionals who can contribute to Australia’s economy and society through their expertise. GSM visas are primarily divided into three main categories:
- Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa: For applicants who are not sponsored by an employer, state, or territory. This visa grants permanent residency, allowing you to live and work anywhere in Australia.
- Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa: For professionals nominated by an Australian state or territory. This visa also offers permanent residency but requires you to live and work in the nominating region for a certain period.
- Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa: For skilled workers nominated by a state or sponsored by a family member in regional Australia. This visa is temporary but provides a pathway to permanent residency.

Application Process
The General Skilled Migration application process is straightforward and structured in clear steps. First, you must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect to indicate your intention to apply. Once invited, you will need to gather and prepare supporting documents to verify your skills, qualifications, and eligibility. After receiving your invitation, you can apply online within 60 days, whether you are in or outside Australia. Following lodgment, the Department will confirm receipt of your application, and if applicable, grant a bridging visa. Finally, you will receive the visa outcome in writing, detailing your visa grant, conditions, or reasons for refusal, including information on any review rights.
