The Student Visa (subclass 500) allows eligible students to:
- Enrol in a CRICOS-registered full-time course
- Stay in Australia for up to 6 years, depending on course duration
- Work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods, with full work rights during course breaks
- Bring eligible family members with you
- Travel in and out of Australia while the visa is valid
Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590)
The Student Guardian Visa (subclass 590) is designed for parents, legal guardians, or custodians of international students in Australia under 18 years of age. It allows guardians to live in Australia temporarily while supporting the student’s education and welfare.
Key features include:
- Reside in Australia for the same period as the student’s visa
- Ensure the well-being and supervision of the minor student
- Travel in and out of Australia while the visa is valid
- At A2MS, we guide guardians through the application process, ensuring all requirements are met so the student can focus on their studies without worry.
Eligibility Requirements for Student Visa
To apply for a Student Visa (subclass 500), applicants must meet the following core eligibility requirements:
Course enrolment – You must be enrolled in a CRICOS-registered full-time course. If applying for a packaged course, all CoEs must be included.
Genuine student requirement – You must demonstrate that your primary purpose in Australia is to study and that you intend to comply with visa conditions.
Age requirement – Students must be 6 years or older, with specific age restrictions for school enrolments (e.g., under 17 for Year 9, under 20 for Year 12).
English language proficiency – Evidence of English skills may be required unless exempt (e.g., previous study in English or sponsored programs).
Financial capacity – You must prove that you can cover tuition, living expenses, and travel costs for yourself and any dependents.
Health and character requirements – You and any family members included in your application must meet Australian health and character standards.
Welfare arrangements – Students under 18 must have adequate welfare arrangements, including a nominated guardian or parent in Australia.
A2MS ensures that all eligibility requirements are carefully assessed and documented, giving your application the strongest chance of success.
How Long You Can Stay
- Primary and secondary school students – up to 3 years for Years 1–4 enrolment
- Vocational education, higher education, and postgraduate students – up to 6 years, depending on course duration
- Research Masters and PhD students – no work restrictions during study periods
If your studies require additional time, you must apply for a new Student Visa, or explore other visa options such as the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) after graduation.
Work Rights
- 48 hours per fortnight during course sessions
- Unlimited hours during official breaks
- No work restrictions for research Masters or PhD students
This flexibility allows students to gain valuable work experience and offset living costs while pursuing their studies.
Including Family Members
You can include your partner or dependent children under 18 years in your visa application. Family members must also meet health, character, and welfare requirements. Subsequent entrants can join later if needed, but must be declared in the original application.
Health Insurance Requirement (OSHC)
All international students and their family members must maintain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of their stay. Exceptions apply to certain reciprocal agreements (e.g., Norwegian, Swedish, Belgian students). A2MS can guide you in selecting the best OSHC provider for your needs.
