Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590): Support a Child Studying in Australia

Understand who can act as a guardian for an international student, current application-location restrictions, required funds, health insurance and obligations while in Australia.

Who is this visa for?

The Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) is a temporary visa for certain eligible people providing care and welfare support to a Student visa holder who is under 18 or, in exceptional circumstances, an older student who genuinely needs that assistance. It is not a general visitor visa, work visa or automatic entitlement because a child studies in Australia.

An eligible guardian may be a parent, person who has custody of the student or a qualifying relative aged 21 or over who has been nominated appropriately. The student must have the relevant immigration and welfare circumstances.

Main eligibility requirements

  • Relationship and responsibility: show that you are an eligible parent, custodian or relative, and where required provide the relevant written nomination.
  • Suitable welfare: be able to provide accommodation, general welfare and genuine day-to-day support to the student.
  • Financial capacity: show genuine access to sufficient funds for eligible living costs, the student’s fees where required, travel and any other relevant expenses.
  • Health and character: meet applicable visa criteria, including evidence of adequate health insurance for the guardian and relevant family.
  • Visa conditions: understand work and study limitations, reporting requirements and other conditions attached to the actual visa grant.

A2MS can help review the relevant relationship documents, welfare arrangements, funding evidence and the guardian’s current immigration status.

Important change from 2 October 2026

Australia changed the rules for lodging and granting Student Guardian and Student visas from 2 October 2026. Most affected temporary visa holders now need to be outside Australia both when lodging and when their visa is granted. The correct outcome depends on the current visa class and the relevant rules.

Home Affairs states that current subclass 590 holders can continue to lodge a further Student Guardian visa application while in Australia. This does not give every other temporary visa holder the same exemption. See official onshore application guidance.

How long can the guardian stay? Can the guardian work?

The length of a subclass 590 visa depends on the student’s stay and age, along with the decision-maker’s assessment. It is not automatically equal to every year of the child’s course. Guardians should check the visa grant for the exact dates and conditions.

Subclass 590 is generally designed for providing care, not employment. Do not assume you can work; review the visa’s particular conditions in VEVO and obtain advice if circumstances change.

Financial preparation and insurance

Financial-capacity requirements for guardians can cover the guardian’s living expenses, the student being supported, travel, course fees and, where relevant, expenses for accompanying children. Home Affairs also sets an annual-income alternative in specified circumstances. The applicable amounts and accepted proof depend on the visa and the applicant’s situation.

Guardian applicants usually need appropriate health insurance—often Overseas Visitors Health Cover or an equivalent eligible product—rather than assuming their child’s Overseas Student Health Cover will cover them. Applicants should verify the precise insurance obligations before purchasing a policy.

Prepare a Student Guardian application

  1. Confirm the student’s age, course, visa and welfare requirements.
  2. Establish your relationship to the student and document any required guardian nomination.
  3. Check whether you can lawfully apply from your current location under the October 2026 rules.
  4. Document sufficient available funds, accommodation and appropriate insurance.
  5. Review the guardian’s health, character, previous visa and travel history.
  6. Submit the correct application and monitor requests for further evidence.
  7. Follow the visa’s approved dates, work limitations and welfare responsibilities after grant.
