Genuine Student (GS) Requirement: Evidence & Answers | A2MS

The Genuine Student (GS) requirement is a central part of a Student visa (subclass 500) assessment. It is not a generic personal statement or a test of whether a student might someday wish to apply for permanent residence. This practical guide explains how to answer honestly with useful evidence.

What changed from GTE to GS?

Home Affairs applies GS to relevant Student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024; relevant earlier applications are assessed under the former Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) rules. Under GS, study must be the primary reason for entering or remaining in Australia. Home Affairs acknowledges that a genuine student may later seek another eligible visa or permanent residence; such aspirations do not automatically make an application non-genuine.

What questions does the Student visa application ask?

  1. Describe your current circumstances: family, community, economic, employment and educational background.
  2. Explain why the particular course, provider and location suit your objectives, including understanding of course and living requirements.
  3. Explain how the qualification benefits you, based on your existing background and realistic career goals.
  4. Provide other relevant information that helps the decision-maker understand your circumstances.
  5. Where applicable, address the additional question for people previously on a Student visa or applying onshore from another visa.

Home Affairs generally prefers these answers in the application form rather than a separate free-standing GS statement. Responses have a 150-word limit per question, must be in English, and should be supported by documents in ImmiAccount. Read the official GS guidance for the wording and evidence expectations.

Evidence that supports a credible explanation

  • Academic transcripts, qualifications, past enrolments and reasons for course choice or change.
  • Employment records, references, proof of business activity, job responsibilities or realistic proposed employment.
  • Evidence of genuine access to funds and, where applicable, economic and family circumstances in the country of residence.
  • Relevant course research: syllabus, entry requirements, fees, provider details, CRICOS registration and alternatives.
  • For previous Australian students, course progress, attendance, study gaps, changes of provider and visa compliance.
  • An accurate record of Australian and other-country travel, previous visa refusals, cancellations and applications.

A useful method for preparing your responses

Start with facts, not a polished template. Write down your actual education and employment history, qualifications, gaps and visa status. Compare your chosen course with your existing skills and career objectives. Gather documents that support the explanation. Then draft short answers that directly address each question and fit the word limit. Any apparent inconsistencies should be explained honestly, not hidden.

Common weaknesses to avoid

  • Copying another student’s GS answers or using generic statements that apply to almost any course.
  • Claiming that an education provider or qualification guarantees a job, permanent residence or future sponsorship.
  • Omitting an earlier refusal, study gap, provider change or other material immigration history.
  • Providing identical or inconsistent facts across a CoE, GS responses, finances and supporting documents.
  • Treating a bank balance alone as sufficient proof of genuine access to funds.
  • Confusing the current GS criterion with the former GTE assessment for a pre-23 March 2024 application.

The October 2026 rules are a separate eligibility question

A persuasive GS response does not resolve all visa criteria. Since 2 October 2026, application location and family-member restrictions have changed. Check your right to lodge onshore and whether an exemption applies before paying tuition or submitting an application. See the A2MS reforms explainer and the official Home Affairs update.

What if a Student visa has been refused on GS or GTE grounds?

Review the department’s refusal notice promptly. Depending on the decision, the circumstances and the relevant law, there may or may not be a right to merits review before the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART). Deadlines can be strict and should never be assumed. See the A2MS Student visa refusal guide.
