Student Visa English Requirements: IELTS and PTE

How much IELTS or PTE do you need for a Student Visa 500? Your minimum score depends on the date you took the test and whether your principal course qualifies for a specified packaged ELICOS, foundation or pathway arrangement. The test requirements differ from each university or college’s admissions standards.

Important: Some subclass 500 applicants are exempt from providing English test evidence. A score alone does not establish visa eligibility.

Check your result now: A2MS IELTS & PTE English Score Checker tests the reported overall score for a Student visa scenario. It does not compare one test to another using a generic conversion formula.

Minimum overall scores for Student Visa 500

For the following table, the 10-week/foundation/pathway column applies only where the specific legislative conditions are satisfied. A general English course or unrecognised pathway does not automatically qualify.

Test and test dateStandardQualifying 10+ weeks ELICOS / foundation / eligible pathwayQualifying 20+ weeks ELICOS
IELTS Academic or General, from 7 Aug 20256.05.55.0
PTE Academic, from 7 Aug 2025473931
IELTS, on/before 6 Aug 20256.05.55.0
PTE Academic, on/before 6 Aug 2025504236

Important difference: This is a reported overall score test for Student Visa 500. Skilled-visa English levels such as Competent or Proficient use four individual component thresholds instead.

When do the lower pathway scores apply?

  • Standard threshold: Where no eligible reduced threshold is applicable, the overall IELTS 6.0 or current PTE 47 benchmark is shown.
  • 10+ weeks ELICOS: The ELICOS must accompany the principal course and meet the timing conditions in the instrument. It is not a universal discount for any English class.
  • Foundation / eligible pathway: The specific foundation and registered eligible pathway criteria must be satisfied. Eligible pathway courses are set out in Schedule 2 of the legislation.
  • 20+ weeks ELICOS: A qualifying ELICOS packaged with the principal course may permit the lower 5.0 IELTS or current PTE 31 threshold, subject to all legislative criteria.
  • Course entry requirements: The college or university may set higher standards or accept different evidence. The visa minimum is not a promise of admission.

Test validity and possible exemptions

Under the 2025 instrument, a test generally needs to have been taken within the two years immediately before the application if provided with the application, or within the specified two-year period before a decision if not supplied at lodgement. The relevant provision and timing must be checked for your circumstances.

Some students do not have to submit an approved English test result. The exemptions can include qualifying passports, certain courses (such as a stand-alone ELICOS, school course or registered postgraduate research course), foreign affairs or Defence categories, secondary exchange students, specified Australian study, or five years of English-language study in specified countries. Exact legislative requirements and documentation matter; a test exemption does not waive unrelated visa criteria.

Completely at-home, remote-proctored IELTS and similar tests are not accepted for Australian visa purposes under Home Affairs rules. Check IELTS One Skill Retake eligibility where relevant.

Practical preparation before booking a test or paying course fees

  • Confirm the provider, campus and actual CRICOS course code. Read the written offer and total tuition.
  • Check the type of IELTS or PTE sitting, the secure test centre, and the exact date of the result.
  • Check if your course package genuinely qualifies for the 10-week, foundation, pathway or 20-week threshold.
  • Verify separate admission requirements with your provider and the current visa requirements with Home Affairs.
  • Prepare a genuine student explanation and separate financial-capacity evidence where required.
  • If you already hold an Australian visa, assess any current conditions and the application-location rules before changing your study plans.
