English Language Requirements for Australian Visas

Different Australian visa subclasses require different English evidence. This guide explains the Home Affairs categories—Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior English—and the published IELTS and PTE Academic thresholds. The test date matters because rules changed on 7 August 2025.

Important: These are defined English levels, not a statement that each visa subclass accepts the same evidence or requires the same minimum. Verify the visa-specific law and the validity of your individual evidence before applying.

Check your own scores: Try the free A2MS IELTS & PTE English Score Checker. It compares Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking against Home Affairs thresholds; it does not use a general IELTS-to-PTE equivalence formula.

The five official English levels

Home Affairs uses defined levels for particular migration requirements. A score at one level does not automatically satisfy every visa subclass. For example, skilled points may be associated with particular levels, while many other visas have their own requirements, exemptions or evidence arrangements.

English levelIELTS Academic / General TrainingPTE Academic: tests on/after 7 August 2025
Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking
FunctionalOverall (average band) ≥4.5Overall ≥24 (not four components)
VocationalEach component ≥5.033 / 36 / 29 / 24
CompetentEach component ≥6.047 / 48 / 51 / 54
ProficientEach component ≥7.058 / 59 / 69 / 76
SuperiorEach component ≥8.069 / 70 / 85 / 88

Order: The PTE numbers above are Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. They are component minimums, not overall PTE targets. A high overall score cannot replace a below-threshold component.

Why test date changes the PTE calculation

For tests taken on or before 6 August 2025, Home Affairs used these PTE Academic thresholds. The new PTE rules are not interchangeable with the old ones.

LevelPTE test on/before 6 August 2025
FunctionalOverall ≥30
VocationalEach component ≥36
CompetentEach component ≥50
ProficientEach component ≥65
SuperiorEach component ≥79

Validity matters: For Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior English, test evidence generally needs to fall within three years for relevant visas; some earlier tests can be considered until 6 August 2028 depending on the subclass. Functional English test evidence generally has a 12-month window, and tests on or before 6 August 2025 were usable only until 6 August 2026 at the latest under the transitional rule. See the legislation and your visa subclass.

How English levels relate to visa pathways

  • 189, 190 and 491 skilled pathways: English can matter both for minimum criteria and the relevant points test. For points-tested applications, Competent English generally earns no additional English points, Proficient 10 points and Superior 20 points, but the visa and nomination rules must still be met.
  • Employer-sponsored pathways (482, 186, 494): Requirements vary with the stream, occupation, employment setting and potential exemptions; do not assume the skilled points-test table applies.
  • Temporary Graduate visa (485): Has its own English evidence and timing rules, which should be checked separately.
  • Partner, Parent and other family visas: Do not assume a universal component-score test applies; Functional English may be relevant in specific contexts, but eligibility depends on the category.
  • Student visa (500): Uses a distinct overall-score table and eligible course-arrangement thresholds; see our dedicated Student Visa English guide.

Evidence, exceptions and common traps

  • The Department generally requires a test taken in a secure testing centre—not IELTS Online or other completely remote-proctored exams.
  • IELTS Academic and General Training can both be recognised, but the correct evidence depends on your visa subclass. IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted only where eligible for the visa.
  • Functional English can sometimes be proved through qualifying passport or education evidence instead of IELTS/PTE.
  • Professional registration bodies, employers and educational institutions can set additional English standards unrelated to the visa minimum.
  • A test score is not a prediction of an invitation, a visa grant, work rights or permanent residency.
