Training visa guide — reviewed 29 October 2026. Start with the Home Affairs subclass 407 guidance. Check the training category, sponsor, nomination and your current visa conditions before making plans.
What is the 407 Training Visa?
The subclass 407 visa allows temporary stays in Australia for an approved training program. Before arranging a placement, check which training category applies, who will sponsor you and what evidence is required.
Key Eligibility Requirements for the 407 Visa
Check the full Home Affairs criteria before applying. The main checks include:
- Sponsorship and nomination: You need an approved temporary activities sponsor and an approved nomination before applying, unless the Commonwealth Government agency nomination exemption applies.
- Temporary training purpose: Explain why you want to undertake the training and provide evidence supporting your plans.
- Financial support: Show how you will support yourself during your stay.
- English: Check the functional English requirements and accepted evidence.
- Health, character and insurance: Meet the relevant requirements and provide the evidence requested for your circumstances.
These are key checks, not the complete eligibility criteria. A consultation does not guarantee sponsorship, a placement or visa approval.
Three types of occupational training
- There are three occupational training types. Check the requirements for the type that matches your proposed training.
- 1. Workplace-Based Occupational Training to Improve Skills
- This category is for structured workplace training in an eligible occupation, tailored to the trainee’s skills and training needs.
- Requirements:
- Your occupation must be eligible for this training type under the current subclass 407 occupation rules. Check the official occupational training requirements.
- You need relevant employment or study experience equivalent to at least 12 months full-time in the occupation, gained in the 24 months immediately before the nomination is lodged.
- • The training must align with your current qualifications and employment background.
- • A detailed Training Plan is required, outlining the specific skills you will gain and how the training aligns with industry standards.
- 2. Training to Obtain Registration
- This category covers workplace training needed for mandatory occupational registration, membership or licensing in Australia or your home country.
- Requirements:
- Provide evidence that the training is needed for mandatory occupational registration, membership or licensing in Australia or your home country.
- Obtain evidence from the relevant registration or licensing body explaining the training requirement.
- • A comprehensive Training Plan that outlines how the training will bridge the gap between your current skills and those required for registration.
- 3. Occupational training for capacity building overseas
- This category has three forms: training required for an overseas qualification, government-supported training, and professional development for overseas managerial or professional employees. Check the requirements for the specific form of training before planning a placement.
- Requirements:
- This category includes training for an overseas qualification, government-supported training and professional development. Each has different requirements.
- Check the specific requirements for the relevant capacity-building category; an employer partnership alone does not establish eligibility.
- Check the evidence needed for the particular capacity-building category. The requirements differ for an overseas qualification, government-supported training and professional development.
The 407 Visa Application Process: Three Essential Stages
STAGE 1: Temporary Activity Sponsorship -Employer becomes an approved sponsor.
Stage 2: Training nomination — the sponsor seeks approval of the proposed training.
STAGE 3: Visa Application: -Applicant submits the 407 visa application.
- Sponsor approval. Check whether the proposed sponsor already holds the required approval. If not, address the sponsorship application first.
- Training nomination. Identify the correct category and prepare evidence of the proposed training, including its purpose, structure and timing. Check whether the Commonwealth Government agency nomination exemption applies.
- Visa application. Once the required approvals are in place, prepare the application and supporting documents. Check your current visa conditions and lawful-stay arrangements before applying in Australia.
A2MS can explain the requirements and assist with application preparation. Home Affairs decides each application on its evidence.
Key Documents Required for the 407 Visa Application
- Identity documents and relevant qualifications or employment records.
- Sponsorship and nomination approvals, where required, and the training plan.
- Evidence explaining your training purpose and temporary stay.
- Evidence of functional English. A test is not the only possible way to meet this requirement.
- Financial support and adequate health insurance.
- Health examinations and character documents, if requested.
Use the Home Affairs checklist for your circumstances. This is a starting point, not a complete list for every application.
407 Visa Conditions
Your visa grant notice and VEVO show the conditions that apply to you. Main applicants and family members can have different work restrictions.
- Check your work and training restrictions before taking another job or changing your training or sponsor.
- Maintain the health insurance required by your visa.
- Check any requirements to report changes in your contact details or circumstances.
- If a No Further Stay condition applies, get advice before planning another application in Australia. Do not assume a Partner visa is exempt, and remember that requesting a waiver does not extend your lawful stay.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long can I stay?
The visa can be granted for up to two years, depending on the training program and the decision on your application.
Can family members apply?
Eligible family members may be included. Their requirements and visa conditions need to be checked separately.
Can I take another job?
Do not assume you can work outside the approved training. Check your grant notice and VEVO before accepting other work.
What costs should I plan for?
Check current government charges and allow for health insurance, travel and living costs. Ask for a clear breakdown of any professional fees before engaging assistance.
What if my sponsor is not approved?
The sponsor needs to address the relevant approval requirements. A2MS can explain the process and help prepare evidence; approval remains a Home Affairs decision.
