Scholarships for International Students in Australia (2027): Eligibility, Fees and Application Dates

A2MS EDUCATION GUIDE · 2027 PLANNING

International student scholarships in Australia: where to look first

Scholarships are not all the same. Some reduce tuition by a percentage; some support research candidates; and a limited number of competitive government programmes cover wider expenses. Your citizenship, academic record, study level, chosen provider, start date and deadline can determine eligibility.

This guide helps you distinguish the categories, find official 2027 information, and build a scholarship shortlist alongside your course choices—with education counselling from A2MS rather than a promise of an award.

3 November 2026 timing check: Standard Australia Awards Scholarships applications for many countries for study commencing in 2027 closed in April 2026. Country-specific rounds may have different dates; consult DFAT’s official timetable and the participating-country list. Do not trust an undated blog claiming every 2027 government award is still open.

1. Which type of funding fits your intended study?

University or college tuition awards

Usually a tuition fee reduction or bursary for particular international courses and student profiles. Some are automatically considered with an admission application; others require a separate form or early deadline.

Australia Awards

Competitive government-funded awards for eligible people from participating countries, tied to development objectives and strict scholarship conditions. Not a general scholarship open to all nationalities.

Research Training Program (RTP)

For eligible research doctorate or research master’s candidates, through participating universities. A coursework master’s is not automatically an RTP-eligible research degree.

Specialist or regional bursaries

May support a specific field, provider or location. Check the current programme: older funding announcements can remain searchable after new rounds stop.

2. Practical 2027 scholarship comparisons

The examples below are official programme illustrations, not A2MS scholarship offers. Selection and exclusions depend on the scholarship’s own terms, qualifying course and intake.

Destination Australia warning: The Australian Government states there are no new Destination Australia programme funding rounds from 1 July 2024. Existing recipients can continue to receive support under their arrangements, but an old advertised award is not proof of a new 2027 opening. Official programme status.

3. What scholarship pages often leave out

  • Course exclusions: Some professional or high-cost programmes are not covered, even when the university has a scholarship with an appealing headline percentage.
  • Automatic versus separate application: A course application may trigger automatic merit consideration, but other awards need an additional personal statement, referee, application form or deadline.
  • Fee discount versus living money: A 15% tuition discount usually does not pay rent, transport, food, visa charges, placement costs or family expenses.
  • Start date and credit transfer: Credit or prior learning can change course duration and sometimes affect minimum scholarship course-length eligibility.
  • Visa and work rights: Receiving an award does not automatically satisfy Student Visa requirements or grant permanent residence. Some government awards include return-home obligations.
  • Fair comparisons: Compare net tuition, eligibility, course quality, accreditation and long-term fit—not the largest headline percentage.

4. The right way to calculate net course cost

Request the full tuition schedule and calculate the discount only on the charges actually covered under the scholarship terms. A percentage reduction on tuition is not necessarily applied to equipment, OSHC, student services, placements, accommodation or all future fee increases.

Illustrative arithmetic—not a scholarship offer: If a tuition amount was AUD 40,000 and an eligible award genuinely reduced that tuition by 15%, the tuition component would be AUD 34,000 before other charges. The institution must confirm the real fee and how and when its award is applied.

Then build your remaining living and study budget using the A2MS indicative Student Visa Funds Calculator and current government financial-evidence guidance. Budget affordability and visa financial capacity are separate questions.

5. A student’s seven-step scholarship research plan

  1. Shortlist your field: use the A2MS Course & Study Pathway Explorer to identify qualification type, academic direction and realistic providers.
  2. Verify the programme: confirm the actual CRICOS course, campus and intake using the course-selection checklist and provider site.
  3. Search official awards: use Study Australia scholarships and the Australian Government Course Search in addition to each university’s own scholarships page.
  4. Check personal eligibility: confirm citizenship, previous GPA, language evidence, exact study level, start date, course restrictions and any offer conditions.
  5. Confirm deadlines: compare the scholarship date with the course admission, English testing and document verification deadlines. Some close before course offers.
  6. Calculate real affordability: document original full tuition, precisely covered tuition after award, living costs and non-tuition expenses.
  7. Keep evidence: save award terms, provider email, official scholarship URL, the date you checked it and your full written offer.

6. Questions students frequently ask

Are Australia Awards Scholarships available for everybody?

No. DFAT lists participating countries and individual requirements; priorities and deadlines differ. Most standard 2027 application windows have already closed as of November 2026. Review the relevant country profile and the official programme guidance.

Can a university scholarship be applied automatically?

Some can, for eligible programmes and academic results. For example, Adelaide University’s international scholarship guidance describes automatic consideration for most scholarships. Others have separate applications, caps, exclusions or competitive review.

Do all research master’s degrees qualify for RTP?

No. The provider determines its research scholarship admissions, programme eligibility, selection and available funding. Coursework master’s programmes are different from eligible research degrees.

Is the Destination Australia scholarship open for new 2027 awards?

The government’s programme page says no further funding rounds commenced after 1 July 2024. Existing scholarship recipients may retain support, but do not assume a fresh round from older webpages.

Does a scholarship guarantee admission or a Student Visa 500?

No. Scholarships, admission requirements and visa eligibility are distinct matters. A competitive award or conditional offer cannot guarantee enrolment, visa approval or employment.

Can A2MS guarantee or obtain a scholarship for me?

No. A2MS can help you interpret education options and publicly stated application conditions. Providers and scholarship organisations make decisions under their own policies.
